Resort Overview

Montgenevre is one of those rare resorts with everything, including possibly the best non-glacier conditions in France! The attractive high altitude old village of Montgenevre is convenient and snowsure with brilliant skiing for all standards and high mileage for those who want it. Montgenevre is an excellent family resort with everything within walking distance, it takes about 15 minutes from end to end. Montgenevre is a beginners paradise with lots of wide open confidence building runs. For 2009 lots of improvements have been made and Montgenevre now ranks 7th out of 30 resorts in France in terms of customer satisfaction.

On The Slopes

From the terrace of the Rocketski hotel at Montgenevre ski resort you can see a vast, white expanse of gently shelving slopes fed by lifts. Beyond is a wide bowl, mostly above the trees. Behind the hotel is the sunny, south-facing slope, reached after a long schuss and short walk, or a longer walk up the village. It's less accessible, quieter, uncrowded, a brilliant area for an early morning blast.

The local lift pass is the Mont de la Lune ski pass which includes Claviere and Cesana, adding about 50% more skiing and allowing intermediates to ski there and back. With Montgenevre neighbouring Claviere, the combined area offers more lifts, piste's and links. You can ski in Montgenevre 'sans frontiers' north or south of the pass and the whole area is fully integrated.

There's been a lot of investment for next season with 21 million euros spent on improving the ski area for 2009. This winter a new ski area will open in Montgenevre called the Serre Thibaud. This ski area is 2500 metre long and links the Chalvet area (behind our RocketSki hotel Rois Mages) with the rest of the Montgenevre ski area. The Chalvet area is tipped to be ‘the’ big attraction for 2009 with 3 new slopes added to the ski domaine as well as numerous snow cannons on this expanded area. In addition, artificial snow coverage on the existing network has been increased to cover 50% of the slopes. Montgenevre has always been known for its excellent snow record, and is now deservedly ranked 7th out of 30 resorts for client satisfaction.

Considerable investment has also spent on lifts across the area. Also new for 2009 is the Telemix Serre Thibaud. This 'telemix' is a brand new lift design alternating between a 6 man chair and a 8 man gondola on the same system!  The Chalmettes lift has also been replaced by a gondola to give better and speedier access to the ski area. Skiers from our RocketSki hotel and chalet will use this lift to ski across and rejoin the Telemix.

Ski holidays in Montgenevre give beginners a great choice, not only on the superb village runs but in the bowl as well. They can ski all the way home on an easy blue path to gain that invaluable sense of achievement. The ski school is friendly and the instructors speak good English.

Montgenevre ski holidays give intermediates the run of sweeping blue runs, reds with gentle moguls, some pretty tree runs and the fantastic Colletto Verde into Italy. Recently, a fast four person chair replaced the uncompromising dog-leg tow to the Rocher de l'Aigle. There are dramatic, craggy outcrops and great views all the way, then a beautiful run, partially off-piste, all the way to Claviere.

Much of the Montgenevre terrain is unofficially pisted by skiers enjoying the gullies and trees between the piste, almost doubling the official mileage. Montgenevre ski holidays give experts three or four challenging blacks and we also recommend the cheap day extension to the Milky Way. There is also a ski away day option to Serre Chevalier for the more advanced skiers, to add a bit more variety for the keen expert skiers.

Snowboarding

The terrain at Montegenevre is great for snowboarders as there is a half pipe just opposite the hotel (snow depending). There is easily accessible off-piste which almost doubles the official ski area. Montgenevre is great for beginner and intermediate snowboarders as it is possible to access the whole area without using a single drag lift.

Off The Slopes

Rocketski is the biggest operator here, so we know Montgenevre very well! Your ski holidays in Montgenevre will find you in a traditional village on a high pass with a long skiing pedigree, a delightful jumble of old stone buildings clustered around a church. Montgenevre's first ski race was held in 1907 and, unlike most French resorts, it is an authentic mountain community with loads if character, established on the high pass for many centuries.

Montgenevre was France's first ski resort and you can see the remains of the antique lift next to the abandoned fortress overlooking the pass. Montgenevre's night life is friendly and fairly lively, centred on a sprinkling of bars with the bar of the Rocketski hotel being one of the focal points.
