Bormio

Wonderful, traditional, snow-sure ski area with long runs and plenty of height. The ski pass includes Livigno and Santa Caterina. An enchanting Alpine village with enormous character and style. Slope-side hotels but still close to the centre.

This amazing medieval town is regularly voted the most beautiful ski resort in the world and offers a unique combination of character, style and good skiing. It's the only ski resort we know with genuine Roman baths! They are fully functioning and one of the essential visits during your stay.

As a serious skiers' resort, Bormio is up there with the best in Italy and regularly hosts World Cup races. In 2005 they host the World Championships and the whole town is getting a facelift in preparation for the big event. We recommended it unreservedly for traditionalists who demand character with their skiing. The ski area is tall and snow-sure, good for intermediates and advanced, who revel in long runs through trees and high speed cruises. The Men's Downhill course is a treat. After a steep start, it's a fantastic red, over every kind of mountain terrain, right to the bottom of the village gondolas.

Beginners can relax in the gondolas before enjoying fantastic conditions on the high but manageable blues and nursery slopes at 2000m. Experts don't have much piste skiing, just a couple of good blacks, but they do have some of the best powder and off-piste in Italy, and a lift pass which includes Livigno and Santa Caterina. Most Alpine villages were established well before skiing was invented but this one is very convenient for the skier. The World Cup Downhill arrives right in the centre of the village near our hotels. Most of which are only a minute or so from lifts and slope but still only 4 or 5 mins from the centre.

Some of the nicest skiing here is at Valdidentro, which is 10 mins by free skibus. The skiing here is North-facing and varied with lots of long runs through trees, and because there's no adjacent village, it's rarely crowded. Livigno is 45 mins and Santa Caterina is 15 mins and both are included on the pass.

Bormio is almost unique in the ski world and anyone who loves Italian life and atmosphere won't need the skiing! Bormio started life as a Roman spa and still maintains its thermal baths. The narrow cobbled streets are pedestrianised and filled at night with a colourful crowd enjoying the lively cafes and immaculate shops. The aprs ski is excellent.
