Madonna Di Campiglio
Resort Overview
This elegant old town on a high pass slumbered for generations as a traveller’s rest before becoming a favourite retreat of the Hapsburg nobility. As luck would have it, the adjacent mountains are perfect for skiers, shelving obligingly from 2600m right to the village. On The Slopes
Beginners are very well served and the ski school operate a free minibus service to the nursery slopes. Most runs are intermediate but not difficult, the main plan being to ski plenty of miles without too much challenge. There’s great variety, especially including the Folgarida and Marilleva extension, which is about half the system.Advanced skiers will enjoy the long, sweeping blacks from the top of Spinale and Pradalago back to the village. There’s also a tremendous World Cup Downhill which is quite friendly if you just want to amble down. The lift system and pisting are absolutely first class and investment is continuous. Recent improvements include a ski bridge built over the road and an express 4 man chair, which improves the link to Folgarida and Marilleva. Night skiing is available.
Campiglio caters best for those who think a ski holiday is about more than mere piste bashing. Even beginners can get to marvellous mountain restaurants to enjoy a great lunch with stunning views thrown in. In the evening the wealthy Italians do a lot of relaxing on terraces, Campari in hand, watching the “passeggiata” (Italian for posing) and enjoying the glorious scenery, exceptional even by Dolomite standards.
Snowboarding
The terrain at Madonna di Campiglio is great for snowboarders.Off The Slopes
The village is traditional, photogenic, well equipped and traffic-free. There is a host of bars, shops and those old fashioned cafés with the lethal cream pastries. Along with Cortina d’Ampezzo, this is the most chic resort in Italy. Although it’s very much the place to find designer furs, Campiglio also is an attractively eclectic mix of traditional mountain village and ritzy resort.Very Italian, traditional, attractive and upmarket. Lots of attractions. Spectacular setting. Very good for non-skiers.
